Eastern Red Cedar, Oriental Bittersweet, Bush Honeysuckle, bean cans, stone, cable antenna

The Spirit of Cedar is a 30’ foot long arbor that depicts the impact invasive plants have on local timber. This work was created as a means to mitigate the spread of invasive bittersweet.

The fast growing vine quickly climbs the trunks of trees and spread through the canopy. The weight of the vine, compounded with strong winds often lead to the toppling of multiple connected trees.

Wrapping strands of vine together exploits the plants innate ability to climb. It corrals the plant into a location, making it easier to cut new growth.
